The Anointing: The Cost and Purpose
Have you ever felt that following Jesus made your life more challenging instead of easier? This counterintuitive reality is actually a sign of God's anointing and purpose for your life. When we receive the Holy Spirit, we're not just given power for our own benefit, but for a greater mission.
The scripture tells us that Jesus returned to Galilee "in the power of the Spirit," teaching in synagogues and earning praise. But when he visited his hometown of Nazareth, something profound occurred. In the synagogue, Jesus read from the scroll of Isaiah:
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
This passage encapsulates the purpose of Jesus' anointing - to bring hope, healing, and freedom to all who were in need. But it's crucial to understand that this anointing wasn't just for Jesus; it extends to all who follow Him.
The Cost of Anointing
As followers of Christ, we're called to partner in His work. But this calling comes with a cost. Just as Jesus faced opposition in His hometown, we too may encounter resistance, even from those closest to us. The anointing of the Holy Spirit sets us apart for a purpose, which can sometimes lead to misunderstanding or conflict with the world around us.
However, we must remember that this opposition is not a sign of failure, but often a confirmation that we're on the right path. Jesus himself said, "If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also" (John 15:20). When we stand up for God's glory and reach out to the lost, we're in good company - the company of Christ himself.
The Pursuit of Holiness
To fully step into our anointing, we must pursue holiness. This isn't about legalism or adhering to a set of rigid rules. Rather, it's about living a life laid down for God, being quick to forgive, quick to repent, and always ready to say "yes" to whatever God has for us.
Holiness means gazing upon God's glory rather than being distracted by the things of this world. It means being willing to let go of anything - even good things - that might be hindering our relationship with God. As we pursue holiness, our desires change, our motivations shift, and we begin to see the world through God's eyes.

The Power of Obedience and Faith
The oil of anointing requires obedience and faith. When God prompts us to do something - whether it's forgiving someone who's hurt us, sharing the gospel with a stranger, or stepping out in prayer for healing - our obedience opens the door for His power to flow.
Faith is equally crucial. We must believe that God can and will work through us. Whether it's praying for a family member's salvation or believing for a miracle, our faith creates an atmosphere where God's power can manifest.
Remember the story of the woman who had been prayed for multiple times? It was the persistence and faith of believers that finally broke through, causing her to recognize God's pursuit of her heart. Our simple acts of obedience and faith can be the catalyst for someone else's breakthrough.
Perseverance in the Face of Opposition
The path of anointing isn't always smooth. We may face rejection, criticism, or even attempts to discredit us. But like Jesus, who "walked right through the crowd" that wanted to throw him off a cliff, we must keep moving forward in our calling.
Galatians 6:9 encourages us: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." The anointing requires perseverance. When everything in us wants to stop, the Holy Spirit urges us to go deeper, to sacrifice more, to keep pursuing God's presence and purpose.
The Greater Call
It's easy to become discouraged when faced with opposition or when we don't see immediate results. But we must remember that there's a greater call on our lives. People are depending on our obedience to experience transformation, healing, and new life in Christ.
We may have to push through "cancel culture," overcome hate, and persevere through difficult circumstances. But the benefit of seeing lives transformed far outweighs the temporary discomfort or disapproval we might face.

A Call to Action
So, what does this mean for us practically? It means we need to be intentional about cultivating our relationship with God. It might mean waking up earlier to spend time in prayer and Scripture. It could involve fasting, sacrificial giving, or stepping out to share the gospel with someone, even when it feels uncomfortable.
For those praying for unsaved family members, it means not just praying but actively sharing the good news of Jesus with them. It means being willing to have difficult conversations and to live out our faith authentically before them.
In all of this, we must remember that we're not alone. The same Spirit that anointed Jesus is at work in us. We carry His presence and His power wherever we go.
As we step out in faith, obedience, and perseverance, we can trust that God will move in powerful ways. Lives will be changed, the oppressed will find freedom, and the broken will experience healing. This is the purpose of our anointing - not for our own glory, but for the advancement of God's kingdom and the transformation of lives.
So don't give up. Don't become weary in doing good. Keep pursuing holiness, walking in obedience, and believing in faith. Your anointing is not just for you - it's for a world in desperate need of the hope, love, and power of Jesus Christ. Embrace your calling, push through the opposition, and watch as God works miracles through your yielded life.
