The Oil of Readiness (July 20)

The Oil of Readiness: Preparing for the Bridegroom's Return

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it's easy to lose sight of our spiritual preparedness. Yet, as believers, we are called to be ready for a momentous event - the return of our Bridegroom, Jesus Christ. This readiness isn't about physical preparation, but rather a spiritual oil that we must cultivate and maintain.

The parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1-13 paints a vivid picture of this spiritual readiness. In this story, ten virgins await the arrival of the bridegroom. Five were wise and brought extra oil for their lamps, while five were foolish and did not. When the bridegroom was delayed and finally arrived at midnight, the foolish virgins found their lamps going out. They asked the wise virgins to share their oil, but were refused and told to go buy their own. While they were gone, the bridegroom came, and only those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast.

This parable isn't just a quaint story - it's a powerful metaphor for our spiritual lives. The oil represents the Holy Spirit and our active, living relationship with God. It's not something we can borrow from others or acquire at the last minute. It must be cultivated daily through obedience, prayer, and a life lived in step with God's will.
But what does it mean to cultivate this spiritual oil? It's about more than just attending church or saying the right words. It's about allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us from the inside out. This transformation often comes through a process of crushing and pressing, much like how olive oil is made.

Imagine an olive. On its own, it has limited use. But when it's crushed and pressed, it produces oil - a substance with countless beneficial uses. In the same way, God often allows us to go through difficult times - times of crushing and pressing - to produce something beautiful and useful in our lives.

This process isn't always comfortable. In fact, it can be downright painful. But on the other side of that crushing is a life that's useful to God - a life that produces the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
Contrast this with the works of the flesh listed in Galatians 5:19-21: sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, and orgies. These are the things that God wants to crush out of our lives, replacing them with His fruit.

The cultivation of spiritual oil is an ongoing process. We can't rely on past experiences or revelations. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities to obey God and grow in our faith. It requires daily dependence on God, waking up each morning with a prayer: "Lord, help me obey you fully today. I want to follow your leading, love as you love, and serve as you serve. Whatever you have for me today, let me do it."
This daily cultivation is crucial because it's possible to run out of oil. While our salvation is secure and irrevocable, our usefulness to God can be diminished if we consistently ignore the Holy Spirit's leading. Like a car without motor oil, we may still be Christians, but we won't be going very far in our spiritual journey.

The good news is that God is always ready to fill us up again. He's not looking for perfection, but for willingness. When we say yes to God, when we choose obedience even when it's difficult, He begins to work in powerful ways in our lives.

This process of cultivating oil isn't just for our own benefit. We're called to be lights in the world, pointing others to Christ. In the ancient Hebrew wedding customs, the bride and her attendants would light lamps to guide the way for the bridegroom when he came. In the same way, our lives, filled with the oil of the Holy Spirit, should shine brightly in the darkness of this world, guiding others to Christ and being ready for His return.
The call to cultivate oil is a call to transformation. It's an invitation to move from a dry, fruitless existence to a life overflowing with the power and presence of God. It's a journey from being a simple olive to becoming anointing oil - useful in the hands of the Master.

This transformation begins with a simple "yes" to God. It's saying, "Lord, I want to be transformed. I want you to use me however you want. I give you my yes." From that place of surrender, God begins to work, filling our lamps with His oil, producing in us everything He desires.
As we cultivate this oil, we find that God takes us from level to level, from glory to glory. He leads us, guides us, and directs us into His glory. But it all starts with our obedience, with allowing Him to walk in front of us and lead the way.

The journey of cultivating oil is not always easy, but it's always worth it. It's a journey best taken in community, surrounded by fellow believers who can encourage us, pray for us, and show us how to walk in faith. It's a journey grounded in God's Word, transformed by His truth, not by altering or changing it for our benefit, but by aligning our lives with His perfect will.
As we cultivate this spiritual oil, we find that we're not just preparing for some future event. We're living in the fullness of what God has for us right now. We're experiencing His presence, His power, and His love in tangible ways. We're becoming the bride that Christ is coming back for - a bride without spot or wrinkle, holy and blameless.

So let us be like the wise virgins, always ready, our lamps full of oil. Let us live each day in anticipation of our Bridegroom's return, allowing the Holy Spirit to crush us, press us, and transform us into vessels of honor, useful for the Master's purposes. For when He returns, may He find us ready, our lamps burning brightly, eagerly awaiting His arrival.
