Encountering the Presence of God: A Call to Closeness

In a world that often feels chaotic and disconnected, there's an invitation extended to each of us - an invitation to experience the powerful, transformative presence of God. This isn't just a casual encounter, but a profound meeting that has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of who God is and who we are in relation to Him.

The God of the universe, the Creator of all things, desires closeness with His creation. This truth is woven throughout the fabric of Scripture, from the very beginning in the Garden of Eden to the promises of eternity. But what does it mean to truly experience God's presence, and why is it so vital for our spiritual journey?
Let's start at the beginning. Picture the moment of creation when God formed Adam from the dust of the earth. In that intimate act, God breathed life into Adam, animating him with divine breath. The first thing Adam saw was the face of his Creator, up close and personal. This powerful image sets the tone for God's desire for proximity with humanity.

Throughout the Old Testament, we see God revealing Himself to individuals like Abraham, not through complex rituals or elaborate systems of worship, but through direct, personal encounters. These moments of divine revelation came before the establishment of religious laws or formal worship practices. Why? Because God's primary desire has always been relationship - to be known by His people.

This desire for closeness isn't just a thing of the past. The same God who walked with Adam in the garden and spoke to Abraham under the stars wants to be close to you today. He wants to reveal His character, His love, His holiness, and His power in tangible ways that transform your life.
But here's the challenge: How often do we approach God with our hearts guarded and our spirits closed off? We may go through the motions of worship, singing the songs and saying the prayers, but our posture betrays a reluctance to truly open ourselves to His presence. We protect our hearts, fearing vulnerability or change.

God's invitation is clear: "Come closer." But like Moses at the burning bush, we must approach with reverence and awe. When Moses encountered God in that miraculous moment, he was told to remove his sandals because he was standing on holy ground. This act symbolizes our need to shed the common, everyday barriers that separate us from experiencing God's holiness.

Holiness, in its essence, is not about being perfect or sinless. It's about being set apart, distinct from the ordinary. When we enter God's presence, we're stepping into a realm that's anything but common. It's extraordinary, life-changing, and transformative.
The beautiful truth is that through Jesus Christ, the veil separating us from God's presence has been torn. We no longer need to stay at a distance. Pentecost ushered in a new era where the Holy Spirit doesn't just visit occasionally but takes up residence within believers. Your very body has become a temple of the Holy Spirit!

This indwelling presence is a constant reality for believers, but there's something special that happens when God's children gather together, seeking Him with unified hearts. It's in these moments that we often experience a heightened awareness of God's presence, a special outpouring of His Spirit.

Imagine a loving father's excitement to be with his children. That's how our Heavenly Father feels about being with us. He runs to meet us, eager to spend time with those He loves. Even when we wander away, like the prodigal son, the Father's heart longs for our return, for restored closeness.
Being "people of the presence" means cultivating a hunger for these divine encounters. It means prioritizing time in God's presence, not just for our own spiritual nourishment, but so we can effectively reach out to others. We come close to God so we can bring others close too.

This pursuit of God's presence isn't about achieving some emotional high or engaging in "spiritual aerobics." It's about opening our hearts to allow God to minister to us, to reveal more of Himself, and to shape us into His image. It requires vulnerability, repentance, and a willingness to lay down anything that hinders our closeness with Him.

The invitation stands: Will you be a person of the presence? Will you cultivate a holy hunger to know God more intimately? The promise is that as our appetite for His presence increases, He will make His home with us in ever-increasing measure.
Practical steps to cultivating God's presence:

1. Create space for stillness: In our busy world, intentionally carve out time to be quiet before God.

2. Practice vulnerability in worship: Don't just sing the words, but open your heart to truly mean them.

3. Meditate on Scripture: Allow God's Word to reveal more of His character to you.

4. Pray for spiritual hunger: Ask God to increase your desire for His presence.

5. Gather with other believers: There's power in corporate worship and seeking God together.

6. Be obedient to God's leading: Sometimes experiencing God's presence requires stepping out in faith and following His direction, even when it's uncomfortable.
Remember, the God of the universe is not distant or uninterested. He is near, desiring to reveal Himself to you in powerful ways. As you seek His face, may you experience the life-changing reality of His presence, growing ever closer to the heart of your Creator and Savior.

"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you." - James 4:8
